Joe Murphy

I’m a journalist and web developer, and data editor at NBC News in New York City. I specialize in data journalism, cleaning and visualizing data, and web site scraping, but that’s not all that I’m good at. Thanks for visiting.

I wrote this bio for myself for a conference panel I was on (NICAR, 2025) and I like it: “Joe Murphy is a technically skilled editor at NBC News who loves figuring things out, getting people on the phone, unusual spreadsheets and making order from chaos. Also a fan of accessibility, Python, CSS, vim and the command line.”

The work I’ve been a part of has won awards from local to national in scope and the one I’m most proud of is the Webby for public service the Plan Your Vaccine project won, which was a giant team effort that spread to the far reaches of Comcast’s empire, spearheaded by the NBC News Data / Graphics team and a host of researchers.
