I’m a journalist and web developer, and Data Editor at NBC News in New York City. I’m skilled editorially and technically, from words to analysis to coding to visualizing, but that’s not all that I’m good at.
I wrote this bio for myself for a conference panel I was on (NICAR, 2025) and I like it:
Joe Murphy is a technically skilled editor at NBC News who loves figuring things out, getting people on the phone, unusual spreadsheets and making order from chaos. Also a fan of accessibility, Python, CSS, vim and the command line.
The work I’ve been a part of has won at least a dozen awards, local and national. I built a searchable database of North Carolina home health care violations that won an award for the Winston-Salem Journal twenty years ago. I was part of the team that won a national Edward R. Murrow award for a data investigation into schoolkid vaccination rates on a county level.
But the award I’m most proud of is the Webby for public service the Plan Your Vaccine project won, which was a giant team effort that spread to the far reaches of Comcast’s empire, spearheaded by the NBC News Data / Graphics team and a host of researchers.
